Safe drive technology

Overview

Protection of man and machine

Essentially the term safe drive technology describes the implementation of safety functions for one or more drive axes. This is necessary to prevent uncontrollable movements. At the same time it guarantees the safety of personnel during operation, setup, format change or maintenance.

The term “safe” is understood in terms of functional safety from the relevant machinery safety standards (EN 61508 and EN ISO 13849-1).

Safe drive technology – External or drive-integrated

The term safe drive technology - safe motion - is interpreted differently, depending on your perspective. Drive manufacturers generally understand safe motion to be drive-integrated safety, whereas control manufacturers associate it with external solutions.

Both solutions have their advantages and disadvantages. The solution you use will depend on your application.

External solution

External solution: Safe logic and safe motion monitoring in external devices

Drive-integrated safety with PMCprotego DS - Safe motion monitoring integrated within the drive
